Details

Embelia ribes, known as false black pepper, white-flowered embelia, vidanga or vaividang, is a flowering plant of the family Primulaceae. Nicolaas Laurens Burman described it in his 1768 publication Flora Indica, and it is widely distributed throughout India. In Cambodia it is called chu preuk or sangkong. The page says Ayurveda and Siddha consider it widely beneficial in a variety of diseases, and that embelin, isolated from its dried berries, has a wide spectrum of biological activities. It lists traditional uses against intestinal worms, indigestion, depression, throat infection, obesity and skin disease, and several of these entries carry a clarification-needed note on the page. The page is a short one, so the plant's habit, height and leaf form are not described there beyond its family, authority and range.
