Sweet Pea
Details
The sweet pea is a scented annual climber of the pea family, native to Sicily, southern Italy and the Aegean Islands. Cunningham gives it a feminine, Venus, water character and the powers friendship, chastity, courage and strength. Fresh flowers worn attract people and friendships, carried or held they make everyone tell the truth, they preserve chastity in the bedroom, and worn they give courage and strength. His health key marks it D+ and X, meaning not to be taken internally in high doses and not recommended for internal use. Wikipedia adds that seeds of the genus Lathyrus are toxic if eaten in quantity. Both are set out in the safety notes. Neither statement is made about this species alone by Wikipedia, so the toxic flag is not set.
Caution
Cunningham's health key marks sweet pea D+ and X: he says not to take it internally in high doses, and does not recommend it for internal use. Wikipedia says there is evidence that seeds of members of the genus Lathyrus are toxic if eaten in quantity, and that a related species, Lathyrus sativus, causes a disease called lathyrism when it makes up much of the diet.
