Sassywood Tree
Details
Erythrophleum suaveolens, also called the ordeal tree, is a flowering plant found across most of tropical Africa. It grows up to 20 metres tall, with rough blackish bark and creamy-yellow flowers in fluffy spikes. Wikipedia says the bark has been used in Liberia to make a toxic concoction for a form of trial by ordeal called sassywood. The article treats the concoction as poisonous. This entry rests on that one article. It records the tree and the sassywood ordeal as the article describes them. It does not describe a dose or a preparation, and the article does not either. Wikipedia prints a Least Concern rating for the species in its taxobox, which is recorded in the ethics file.
Caution
The article calls the bark concoction used in the Liberian sassywood ordeal toxic.
