Details
Boerhavia diffusa is a flowering plant in the four o'clock family, called red spiderling, spreading hogweed or tarvine. In India it is known as punarnava and used in Ayurveda. The page says it is taken in herbal medicine for pain relief and other uses, and that its leaves are often eaten as a green vegetable in many parts of India. It is a creeping, perennial, much-branched herb with stout spindle-shaped roots. The flowers are small, about 5 millimetres across, with a dark-pink funnel-shaped limb marked by five vertical bands. The fruits are very sticky and grow a few inches off the ground, which the page says suits them for latching onto small migratory birds, and explains the plant's wide range. Its true native range has not been determined, and it has naturalised in many places. Compounds isolated from it include two rotenoids, Boerhavia G and H, and the alkaloid lunamarine.
