Meconopsis aculeata
Details
Meconopsis aculeata is a blue-flowered, thorny species of the poppy family and of the genus Meconopsis. Its small range is restricted to specific areas of Pakistan and India in the western Himalayas, and it was described from specimens collected there by Royle in 1833. In Ladakh it is known as Bhoti 'Tsersnon'. Together with Juniperus polycarpos, known as Bhoti 'Shukpa', it is used in the Sowa-Rigpa traditional medicine system, also called the Amchi system. The Ladakh administration has proposed the two as the state flower and state tree. The page records that the species is highly valued as a medicinal plant, and that the resulting demand has placed pressure on wild populations through over-collection. The page does not say which part is used.
