Details

Clivia gardenii is a geophyte, a plant that survives the dry season as an underground storage organ, in the genus Clivia of the amaryllis family, Amaryllidaceae. It occurs in KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa, from the Ngome Forests to the KwaZulu-Natal Midlands, and has an area of occurrence of 6,900 square kilometres. Wikipedia says there are currently fewer than ten subpopulations, and that the species has lost 30% of its habitat in the last 90 years because of its excessive use by traditional healers and its collection by horticulturalists. Plantations, crop cultivation and development are also named as threats. The article is short: it does not say which part of the plant healers use or what it is used for, so this entry records only that traditional healers use the plant and that the use is a conservation concern.
