Details

Cascara sagrada is the bark of a small tree of western North America, Frangula purshiana, which Wikipedia lists under the synonym Rhamnus purshiana and the names cascara, cascara buckthorn and bearberry. Cunningham lists legal matters, money and protection. An infusion is sprinkled around the home before going to any court proceeding to help win the case. It also goes into money spells and is worn as an amulet against evil and hexes. The American Herbal Products Association covers the bark as a stimulant laxative, saying it is not for use in pregnancy or lactation except under a qualified practitioner, is contraindicated with intestinal obstruction or inflammatory bowel conditions, is not for long-term use, and must be aged for a year or heat-treated before use. Both older sources print the synonym Rhamnus purshiana.

Caution

The American Herbal Products Association says the bark is not for use in pregnancy or lactation except under the supervision of a qualified healthcare practitioner, and is contraindicated with intestinal obstruction, abdominal pain of unknown origin, or any inflammatory condition of the intestines. It says not to use it with abdominal pain or diarrhea, not to exceed the recommended dose, not for long-term use, and that the bark must be aged for a year or heat-treated before use. It cautions concomitant use with antiarrhythmic drugs and cardiac glycoside botanicals. It reports one case of cholestatic hepatitis in a patient also taking other medications, and confirmed occupational asthma.
