Details
Brahmi, also called water hyssop, is a perennial, creeping, non-aromatic herb of wetlands that is native to many parts of the world and grows in marshy areas across India, Nepal, Sri Lanka, China, Pakistan, tropical Africa, Madagascar, Australia and the Americas. Its succulent oblong leaves grow in opposite pairs, and its small flowers are white with four or five petals. It can tolerate slightly brackish water and is propagated by cuttings. Ayurveda uses it in the belief that it may improve memory and various ailments, but the page says there is no good evidence that it improves cognition. In 2019 the US Food and Drug Administration warned supplement makers against unproven and illegal health claims. Its best-known compounds are the bacosides.
Caution
The most commonly reported adverse effects are nausea, increased intestinal motility and gastrointestinal upset. Its safety and effectiveness remain uncertain.
