Boneset
Details
Boneset, also called common boneset, agueweed or feverwort, is a North American perennial of the daisy family, Asteraceae, found from Nova Scotia to Florida and west to Texas and Manitoba. Wikipedia describes opposite, toothed leaves that clasp the hairy stem, and dense clusters of tiny white flower heads in late summer and early autumn. It says colonists learned from native peoples to use the plant to break fevers by inducing sweating. Cunningham calls it feminine, with Saturn and water, and lists protection and exorcism. He says the plant wards off evil spirits, and an infusion is made and sprinkled about the house to drive evil away. Kynes has no boneset entry. Cunningham and Wikipedia both record hazards, set out in the safety notes.
Caution
Cunningham marks boneset X, meaning it is not recommended for internal use. Wikipedia says it is listed on the Poisonous Plants Database of the US Food and Drug Administration, and that the US National Library of Medicine describes it as an unapproved homeopathic medicine of unknown safety.
