Ammolite
Details
Ammolite is an organic gemstone found mainly along the eastern slopes of the Rocky Mountains of North America, within the bounds of the ancient Western Interior Seaway. It is made of the fossilised shells of ammonites, which are composed chiefly of aragonite, the mineral of nacre, and it is one of the few biogenic gemstones, with amber and pearl. It was given official gemstone status by the World Jewellery Confederation in 1981 and is Alberta's official gemstone. The name aapoak is Kainah for "small, crawling stone". The Blackfeet know it as iniskim, "buffalo stone", and have long believed it to hold amuletic powers that help the buffalo hunt and draw buffalo within tracking distance; they also believe it has healing powers and keep it in their medicine bundles for ceremonies. Feng shui practitioners later called it the "seven color prosperity stone", with ruby red, emerald green and amber yellow said to enhance growth, wisdom and wealth.
